A seemingly random act of violence left two men dead Friday afternoon after a motorcyclist was gunned down along a busy roadway in Cumberland County, according to Maine State Police.
The incident unfolded just before 2 p.m. on Roosevelt Trail (Route 302) at the intersection of Landing Road, where witnesses reported that a silver sedan pulled up alongside a motorcycle and its rider was shot multiple times. Despite life-saving efforts by witnesses and a Maine Game Warden who happened to be nearby, the victim, identified as 33-year-old Erin Hayne of Casco, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said the shooter, identified as James Ford, 48, of Windham, had no known connection to Hayne. Witnesses in a U-Haul truck reportedly followed Ford’s vehicle and relayed the license plate number to 911 dispatchers before losing sight of him near the Windham-Raymond town line.
Cumberland County deputies later located the suspect’s silver sedan abandoned behind a Dunkin’ on Route 302 in Raymond. A perimeter was established, and the Maine State Police tactical team deployed a K9 unit, which eventually discovered Ford’s body nearby.
State Police confirmed Ford was the registered owner of the vehicle linked to the shooting. His death ended the tense manhunt that had prompted a shelter-in-place order in the area Friday evening.
Investigators continue to search for answers, as authorities say the shooting appears to have been random and unprovoked.
