Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal Friday night shooting in York as 23-year-old O’Shea Copeland.

The York County Coroner’s Office said Copeland was pronounced dead at WellSpan York Hospital at 8:50 p.m. on Aug. 15, following a shooting on the first block of Highland Avenue around 8:20 p.m. Deputy Coroner Onalee Gilbert responded to the hospital to investigate and certify the death. An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday, Aug. 18, at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown.

According to West York Borough Police Chief Matt Millsaps, the shooting stemmed from an altercation outside the Carriage Apartments. A second victim, also in their early 20s, was critically injured but later stabilized after being taken to a hospital.

Police said the victims knew the suspects, though no arrests have yet been made. Officials emphasized the shooting was not random and that there is currently no threat to the public.

As investigators worked the scene, West Market Street, West King Street, and Monroe Street were temporarily closed Friday night. The York County Coroner’s Office confirmed the case is being investigated as a homicide.

The tragic death of O’Shea Copeland leaves family, friends, and the York community mourning the sudden loss of a young life.
