Lyons Township High School Student, Mother Identified in Deadly Suburban Attack

Authorities have identified the victims in a violent home invasion and police-involved shooting in unincorporated Lyons Township earlier this week as a Lyons Township High School student and her mother.

Officials confirmed that 16-year-old Emily Romo, a student at Lyons Township High School’s North Campus, died Thursday evening after being suffocated during the attack. Her mother, 48 years old, remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Prosecutors said 35-year-old Juan Carlos Perez-Abarca, of Orland Park, used a ladder to break into the family’s apartment on Joliet Road Monday evening, where he allegedly hid until the victims returned home. Perez-Abarca previously had a relationship with Romo’s mother, who had ended it and sought an emergency order of protection earlier that day. The request was denied at the time but later granted.

Deputies responding to the domestic violence call around 5:30 p.m. found Romo unresponsive and her mother being held at knifepoint. Prosecutors said the mother had discovered Emily with a plastic bag over her head. Moments later, Perez-Abarca allegedly stabbed the woman again in front of deputies, prompting one officer to shoot him in the leg to stop the attack.

Romo and her mother were rushed to the hospital, where the teen was later pronounced dead. Perez-Abarca was discharged Thursday and appeared in court Friday in a wheelchair, charged with attempted murder and home invasion, with charges expected to be upgraded to murder. He was ordered held without bail until his next court date on September 5.

During Friday’s hearing, prosecutors described the assault as “nothing short of a horrific act of violence.” Body camera footage released by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office showed the harrowing confrontation between deputies and Perez-Abarca.

The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force is reviewing the officer-involved shooting, while Cook County detectives continue their investigation into the deadly attack.
