A 35-year-old inmate at Upstate Correctional Facility was killed Thursday evening after a fight broke out inside his cell, according to New York State Police.
Antawon R. Johnson was found unconscious and unresponsive around 8 p.m. during routine rounds by correction officers. Blood was visible inside the cell, and a correction officer immediately began life-saving measures and called for medical assistance. Johnson was transported to the facility’s infirmary, where staff attempted to revive him, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
State Police reported that when Johnson was discovered, he had a bed sheet and a shoelace wrapped around his neck. He was pronounced dead by the Franklin County coroner. An autopsy conducted on Saturday by Dr. Michael Sikirica in Glens Falls ruled the death a homicide, with asphyxiation due to strangulation listed as the cause.
Johnson had been sharing a cell with 28-year-old Arkies Sommerville at the time, and the fatal incident reportedly followed a fight between the two. State Police have not yet confirmed whether charges have been filed and said the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, and further updates are expected as the case develops.
