13-Year-Old Kalekg Nabess Shot and Killed in Pimicikamak Cree Nation; Arrest Made

A devastating tragedy has struck the Pimicikamak Cree Nation community after 13-year-old Kalekg Nabess was fatally shot on Saturday evening, August 16.

According to Cross Lake RCMP, officers responded around 5:40 p.m. to reports of a shooting at a residence. Upon arrival, they found Nabess critically injured by gunfire. He was rushed to the local Nursing Station but was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter. Authorities have confirmed the incident is being treated as a homicide.

A 17-year-old male was arrested at the scene in connection with the shooting, and police recovered a firearm believed to be used in the incident. Investigators are not currently seeking additional suspects, and charges have not yet been released.

News of Kalekg’s death has sent shockwaves through the close-knit community. Friends, family, and neighbors are mourning the loss of a young life cut tragically short. One community member shared, “Kalekg was just a boy. He had his whole life ahead of him, and now his family is left grieving a tragedy that should never have happened.”

The Cross Lake RCMP, along with RCMP Major Crimes Services and Forensic Identification Services, continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities have not released information regarding a motive.

The Pimicikamak Cree Nation community now faces the heartbreaking reality of losing a child to gun violence, as they come together to mourn and support Kalekg’s family during this devastating time.
