Authorities have confirmed the identity of a man who tragically perished after going missing in Candlewood Lake last week.
The victim, 55-year-old Anand Baghel of Hamden, was reported missing on Friday after reportedly jumping off an anchored boat into the lake, according to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). Baghel did not resurface.
A multi-agency search operation was launched immediately, which later transitioned into a recovery mission when Baghel remained unaccounted for. The search was temporarily paused overnight and resumed the following morning. Baghel’s remains were recovered shortly after 3 p.m. on Saturday, with his identity confirmed publicly on Monday.
A DEEP spokesperson offered condolences, saying, “Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the victim during this profoundly challenging time. We offer our sincerest condolences and hope they can find solace and support as they mourn this heartbreaking loss.”
The department also reminded the public of the dangers associated with recreational water activities, noting, “Even seasoned swimmers may face unforeseen difficulties, and we encourage everyone who enjoys Connecticut’s lakes and waterways to take all necessary precautions for their safety and the safety of those nearby.”
