Authorities have confirmed that Oscar Lopez, 52, died following a serious traffic collision early Monday morning on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in northeast El Paso.
According to the El Paso Police Department, the crash occurred just before 5:30 a.m. Investigators from the Special Traffic Investigations Unit say a southbound truck swerved to avoid a potential collision, lost control, and crossed into oncoming traffic, striking two vehicles traveling in the opposite direction. Lopez was driving one of the struck vehicles.
Emergency responders transported Lopez to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The condition of the other drivers involved has not yet been confirmed.
Police are investigating the cause of the truck driver’s sudden swerve. Possible factors under review include speed, distraction, road conditions, or mechanical issues. Authorities stressed that the investigation remains ongoing and are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage to contact the El Paso Police Department.
Lopez’s death highlights the dangers of early morning driving, when limited visibility and sudden traffic maneuvers can turn deadly. Friends, family, and community members are mourning the loss of a beloved resident whose life ended tragically.
