Newberry County Sheriff Identifies Suspect in Deadly I-26 Shooting

Authorities have identified the man charged in connection with a deadly shooting on Interstate 26 near Exit 82.

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster confirmed that 45-year-old Wilfrido George Luna, a Midlands resident, has been charged with murder following the Sunday incident.

According to investigators, Luna allegedly shot a female victim before fleeing across both lanes of the interstate. He then attempted to carjack a tractor-trailer before running toward the Mid Carolina Country Club. Sheriff Foster clarified that the truck driver had no connection to the incident and was simply flagged down by Luna.

After a brief standoff, deputies apprehended Luna in the parking lot of the country club. Scott Crouch, General Manager of Mid-Carolina Golf Course, said staff quickly enacted safety measures. “We actually have horns that you can blow, airhorns, so we blew that, went around in carts and got everybody herded up here (clubhouse) as well as in my maintenance shop and got them all safe,” Crouch said.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released as of Monday evening.

The School District of Newberry County confirmed that Mid-Carolina High School and Mid-Carolina Middle School, along with three elementary schools — Little Mountain, Pomaria-Garmany, and Prosperity-Rikard — were placed on lockdown or in “Secure Mode” during the incident. Officials reported that all schools have since returned to normal operations and all students and staff are safe.

The investigation remains ongoing.
