Police have identified the man killed in a Friday night shooting near Mazda Terrace and North Clinton Avenue as 44-year-old Maurice Streeter.
Officers and state troopers shut down the area just after 9 p.m. after responding to reports of gunfire. When they arrived, Streeter was found on the scene suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was taken to a hospital by ambulance, where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators believe Streeter was on the porch of a building when an argument with another individual escalated into gunfire. At this time, no suspects are in custody. The Rochester Police Department’s Major Crimes Homicide Unit is leading the investigation, with support from New York State Police.
Friends and community members are remembering Streeter not only for his love of music but also for his contributions to Recovery All Ways (R.A.W.), a local organization where he volunteered regularly. Known in the music community as “Black Sinatra,” Streeter had a long history in rap battles and was admired for his passion and talent.
“So his name was Black Sinatra and he’d been doing rap battles; I was in my 20s when I met him and he was doing rap battles and just traveling all over, not just in New York,” said Stephanie Forrester, Board President of Recovery All Ways. “He’d be the first one at the door ready to help open, set up, and jump in anywhere we needed him. Always with a smile, full of love and light—we’re really going to miss him.”
Investigators are urging anyone with information or video regarding the shooting to contact the Major Crimes Unit at (585) 428-7157, Crime Stoppers at (585) 423-9300, call 911, or email MajorCrimes@cityofrochester.gov.
