Tragic Route V Crash in Jefferson County Kills Two, Leaves 3-Year-Old Hospitalized

A tragic crash on Missouri Route V in Jefferson County left two adults dead and a 3-year-old child injured, the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) reported.

The collision occurred shortly before 9 p.m. north of Weathered Stone Drive and involved a Dodge Dakota and a Hyundai Elantra. MSHP said the Dodge, traveling southbound, was moving too fast for roadway conditions. The driver failed to navigate a left-hand curve, partially leaving the road, then overcorrected, crossing the double yellow line and striking the front-left side of the northbound Hyundai.

The Dodge overturned, ejecting its 26-year-old driver from De Soto, while the Hyundai, driven by 30-year-old Riki Lynne Hamm of Hillsboro, briefly caught fire after leaving the roadway. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

A 3-year-old passenger in the Hyundai, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Neither driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
