William Brent Hinds, co-founder and guitarist of the Grammy Award-winning heavy metal band Mastodon, has died following a motorcycle crash late Wednesday night in Atlanta. He was 51.
According to the Atlanta Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 11:35 p.m. at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Boulevard SE. Emergency responders arrived on scene and confirmed Hinds had succumbed to his injuries.
On Thursday, Mastodon released a heartfelt statement on social media, mourning the loss of their longtime bandmate and friend.
“We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident. We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time.”
Hinds, known for his innovative guitar work and distinct stage presence, helped form Mastodon in 2000. Over the past two decades, the Atlanta-based band has become one of the most influential names in heavy metal, winning widespread acclaim for albums like Leviathan, Blood Mountain, and Crack the Skye. The group earned a Grammy Award in 2018 for Best Metal Performance with their song “Sultan’s Curse.
Fans, fellow musicians, and members of the metal community have begun sharing tributes online, honoring Hinds’ artistry, humor, and lasting impact on music.
The crash remains under investigation by Atlanta authorities.
