The Louisiana State Police (LSP) are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of 77-year-old Clyde Butler of New Orleans late Wednesday night.
The accident occurred shortly after 11 p.m. on August 20 along I-10 East near the LA 73 exit. According to investigators, Butler was driving a 2003 Ford F-150 when the pickup veered off the roadway for reasons still under investigation. The vehicle struck both a guardrail and bridge railing before overturning multiple times.
Troopers said Butler was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was partially ejected from the truck. Despite the swift arrival of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles or injuries were reported.
Authorities have not yet determined what caused the truck to leave the travel lanes. Investigators are considering potential factors such as distraction, impairment, fatigue, or a medical issue. Standard toxicology tests will be conducted as part of the coroner’s investigation.
Officials noted that rollover accidents, particularly those involving pickup trucks and SUVs, are among the deadliest types of crashes. LSP emphasized the importance of always wearing seat belts, which remain the most effective protection against fatal injuries in rollovers.
Community members in both Ascension Parish and New Orleans have expressed sorrow over Butler’s passing. His death adds to the growing number of traffic fatalities reported on Louisiana highways this year, underscoring the dangers of late-night travel and the need for continued vigilance on the road.
The Louisiana State Police continue to investigate the crash and are expected to release additional details as they become available.
