Baton Rouge Police Chase Ends in Deadly Crash, One Killed, Two Critically Injured

A short police chase in Baton Rouge Wednesday night ended in tragedy, leaving one person dead and two others critically injured. The Baton Rouge Police Department reported that a driver refused to stop after an officer attempted to pull over a vehicle for traffic violations in the Mall City area.

The chase lasted approximately two minutes before ending around 10 p.m. on August 20 in the 5100 block of Greenwell Springs Road. During the pursuit, police said a gun illegally modified with a machine gun conversion device was thrown from the vehicle.

Authorities reported that the car, traveling westbound, lost control near North Foster Drive, ran off the road, struck a water line, a wooden fence, and a business, and then caught fire.

Emergency responders pulled three people from the burning vehicle. The driver, identified as 24-year-old Janae Fieldings, was pronounced dead at the scene. The two passengers were transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the chase and the crash, including the presence of the modified firearm, and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
