Virginia State Police Investigating Halifax County Crash That Killed 71-Year-Old Brenda Pannell

A tragic traffic accident in Halifax County claimed the life of a 71-year-old woman and left another driver with minor injuries on Wednesday afternoon, August 20.

According to the Virginia State Police (VSP), the crash occurred at the intersection of Route 501 and Stage Coach Road. Investigators said a Dodge Ram traveling south on Route 501 collided with a Chrysler 300 headed east on Stage Coach Road. Route 501 does not have stop signs, while Old Stage Coach Road does—a factor authorities say may have contributed to the collision.

The driver of the Chrysler, Brenda B. Pannell, 71, of Brookneal, died at the scene. Troopers reported she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The driver of the Dodge Ram sustained minor injuries and was also unrestrained.

Emergency responders quickly arrived to provide medical aid and secure the crash site. The collision caused temporary traffic disruptions as investigators examined the roadway, vehicle damage, and other contributing factors.

Friends, family, and neighbors are mourning the loss of Pannell, described as a beloved member of her community. Safety advocates stress that the incident underscores the importance of wearing seatbelts and exercising caution at intersections, particularly where traffic control devices vary.

Virginia State Police continue to investigate the crash. No additional details about the Dodge Ram driver have been released at this time.
