16-Year-Old Joel Mercado Identified as Victim in Deadly Covina House Party Shooting

Authorities have identified the teenager killed during a weekend house party in Covina as 16-year-old Joel Mercado, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office. His death has left the community in shock as investigators continue to search for answers.

The shooting occurred late Saturday night, around 10:15 p.m., at a residence in the 600 block of East Camellia Drive, just north of the San Bernardino (10) Freeway. Covina police said the gathering was a large back-to-school party, reportedly promoted on social media and attended by nearly 100 teenagers. The atmosphere quickly turned chaotic when gunfire erupted, striking Mercado.

Emergency crews transported him to a nearby hospital, but despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Police confirmed that a firearm was recovered at the scene, and two people were detained for questioning. However, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The tragedy has raised concerns about the risks of large, open-invite parties. ABC7 described the gathering as an “open-invite swimming party,” highlighting how such events can spiral out of control.

On Sunday evening, family, friends, and community members gathered for a vigil to honor Mercado, placing candles near the home and sharing memories of the 16-year-old.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the Covina Police Department at 626-384-5595 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.

Joel Mercado’s death stands as a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence on young lives.
