Authorities have identified the victim of a deadly crash in Winnebago County on Thursday evening as 22-year-old Nycholas Spears of Rockford.

According to the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office, the crash occurred shortly before 5:15 p.m. on West Lane Road, just east of Mitchell Road. A preliminary investigation revealed that a vehicle traveling westbound lost control, struck a curb, and veered off the roadway before rolling several times.

Emergency crews from the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, the Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department, and MD-1 responded to the scene. When they arrived, they found Spears unresponsive inside the vehicle. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:55 p.m.

Spears was a passenger in the vehicle, officials confirmed. The identity and condition of the driver have not yet been released.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, August 25, to determine the exact cause of death. The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash, and additional details may be released as the investigation progresses.
