The Santa Maria community is grieving the loss of David “Dubie” DuBransky, a cherished teacher, mentor, volunteer, and friend whose passing has left a profound void in the hearts of countless students, families, and colleagues.
David was widely known for his kindness, dedication, and extraordinary impact. To those who knew him, he was more than just a teacher; he was a role model, motivator, and source of inspiration whose influence extended far beyond the classroom walls. Students, parents, and colleagues alike remember him as someone who could connect with every child and family he encountered, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.
A proud alum of the Santa Maria-Bonita School District (SMBSD), David returned to give back to the community that had shaped him. He began his teaching career in 2000 at Ontiveros School, later teaching at Rice School, before finding his long-term home at Tunnell Elementary, where he taught fourth grade from 2004 onward. Many of his students credit him with igniting their love of learning and even inspiring some to pursue careers in education.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, David became the first-ever recipient of SMBSD’s Key to the District Award in 2022, selected by Board President Ricky Lara. Lara reflected on the profound influence David had, noting that his own son became a teacher because of David’s guidance—demonstrating the multigenerational impact of his mentorship.
David’s commitment to children extended far beyond the classroom. He dedicated countless hours to coaching in the Flag Football League, organizing the SMBSD elementary track meet, and volunteering with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Mid Central Coast. A talented photographer, he captured precious moments at community and youth events, and as a magician, he brought joy and wonder to children at fundraisers, school functions, and celebrations.
Colleagues describe him as a man of knowledge, perseverance, and generosity of spirit, while parents and students remember him fondly: “You were Emma’s favorite teacher at Tunnell School. You were such a wonderful man. You will truly be missed.”
Though his passing is both sudden and heartbreaking, David DuBransky’s life serves as a shining example of service, joy, and love for children. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of laughter, learning, and lifelong connections that will continue to touch the Santa Maria community for years to come.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, students, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, Dubie—your reward is well earned.
