Shooting Near Buckholts Prompts Multi-Agency Response and Search for Suspect

BUCKHOLTS, Texas — A shooting outside Buckholts on Tuesday, August 26, led to an extensive search involving multiple law enforcement agencies as authorities attempted to locate the suspect.

According to the Milam County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded just after 11 a.m. to the 1800 block of CR 104 off FM 1915, where they discovered 24-year-old Grace Durbin suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to a nearby hospital and told deputies she had been shot by her boyfriend, 38-year-old Cody Villareal.

Law enforcement quickly established a perimeter around the property and attempted to contact Villareal, but he did not respond. The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and mobile command unit joined the operation, deploying an armored vehicle and drone to search the property. Despite their efforts, no suspect was located inside.

At one point, resources were diverted after reports of a suspicious individual on a nearby property. The man was later detained but determined not to be connected to the case. The diversion delayed the search, which resumed later in the day.

By 5 p.m., deputies had completed a full search of the property on foot, by vehicle, and by air, declaring the scene secure. Villareal, however, remains at large. Authorities say warrants are being pursued for his arrest on a charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon – Family Violence.

Officials confirmed that both Durbin and Villareal were already known to law enforcement. Earlier this year, Durbin had been charged with aggravated assault after allegedly shooting Villareal on the same property.

Milam County Sheriff Mike Clore expressed gratitude for the support of multiple agencies during the incident. Assisting in the operation were the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers, Buckholts Police, Milam County Emergency Services District 1 paramedics, and the Milam County Fire Marshal.

Authorities emphasize that Villareal is not believed to pose a threat to the public at this time. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to contact law enforcement.
