One Dead, Six Injured After Shooter Opens Fire in South Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS — One person was killed and six others were injured Tuesday afternoon in a shooting near East Lake Street and Interstate 35W in south Minneapolis.

Police said the shooter approached a group of people standing at the corner of East 29th Street and Clinton Avenue South and opened fire with a high-powered rifle, discharging approximately 30 rounds.

At a news conference, Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the attack was targeted, not random. “It’s more a weapon of war than something to be on the street here,” O’Hara said. “Just the damage that was done to the bodies of some of these victims is unspeakable. And thankfully we don’t have more people dead from this incident.”

The suspect fled the scene, and investigators are working to identify and locate him. Authorities confirmed they have substantial evidence under review. Five of the victims ran and took shelter in nearby businesses.

The shooting occurred outside Cristo Rey Jesuit High School while students were inside. Police said all seven victims appear to be adults, and there is no indication anyone affiliated with the school was involved.
