Reuters Journalist Hussam al-Masri Killed in Israeli Strike at Gaza Hospital

Gaza — Hussam al-Masri, a veteran Reuters cameraman, was killed on Monday after Israeli fire struck Gaza’s Nasser Hospital, where he had been operating a live video feed. Masri, 49, had long been dedicated to documenting the human toll of the war, even as he himself endured hardship, living in a tent and struggling to feed his family.

Colleagues remembered Masri for his resilience, optimism, and unwavering commitment to his work. “Tomorrow will be better,” he often said, even in the face of escalating violence and hunger. It was the same phrase he used in his final conversation with Mohamed Salem, a senior Reuters visuals journalist who had worked alongside him since 2003.

Reuters editor-in-chief Alessandra Galloni paid tribute, calling Masri “deeply devoted to telling the story of Gaza to the world” and describing him as “strong, steady and courageous in the most challenging of circumstances.”

Video captured Masri’s final moments: his body was recovered next to his camera on the hospital’s external stairwell, where he had been filming views across Khan Younis when the strike hit. Minutes later, a second blast killed at least 19 others, including rescue workers and four journalists affiliated with outlets such as the Associated Press and Al Jazeera. Among them was Moaz Abu Taha, a freelancer who had provided visuals to Reuters and others. Reuters photographer Hatem Khaled was injured in the follow-up strike while documenting the aftermath.

Israel’s military told Reuters that neither Reuters nor Associated Press journalists were targeted in the strike. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed regret over what he called a “tragic mishap” at the hospital.

Masri’s death marks yet another devastating blow to Gaza’s press corps, already reeling from mounting losses amid the ongoing conflict.
