Speed, Impairment Likely Factors in New Philadelphia Crash That Killed 21-Year-Old Terron Henderson

NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio — Authorities have identified the individuals involved in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning that left one man dead and another in custody.

According to the New Philadelphia Police Department, officers responded around 2:06 a.m. on August 23 to the intersection of South Broadway and Hilan Avenue SW for a report of a crash with injuries. Upon arrival, officers found a vehicle and a deceased man outside of it.

The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Terron Henderson of New Philadelphia. Witnesses reported that Henderson had been hanging out of the window of a Dodge Charger and pounding on the roof in an excited manner shortly before the crash.

The driver, 37-year-old Janesh Levy Cabrera-Vargas, fled the scene on foot but was quickly located and arrested nearby. Cabrera-Vargas holds a Virginia driver’s license but currently resides and works in New Philadelphia.

Investigators believe that speed and impairment were contributing factors in the crash, though lab results are pending. The incident remains under investigation.

Authorities thanked the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office, New Philadelphia Fire Department, and New Philadelphia Street Department for their assistance at the scene.
