An investigation is underway after an inmate was found dead inside the Lee County Detention Center late Sunday evening.

According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, 47-year-old Aaron Dwight Johnson was discovered lying unresponsive on the floor of his assigned cell by corrections deputies at approximately 9:08 p.m. on August 31, 2025.

Officials say preliminary findings suggest Johnson may have suffered a medical issue. No signs of foul play were observed at the scene.

As part of standard procedure, the Russell County Sheriff’s Office has been called in to conduct an independent investigation into Johnson’s death. His body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for a postmortem examination.

The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that once the investigation is complete, the results will be forwarded to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office for presentation to a grand jury.

The case remains under active investigation.
