Remembering Sergeant Ken Salas: Spokane County’s Dedicated Servant Leader

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash — Gentle sunlight falls on the flowers and heartfelt messages left in memory of Sergeant Ken Salas, a man who gave his life in service to his community.

Notes and flowers now mark the spot, honoring the sergeant’s servant heart and leadership. One tribute reads, “Kenny, you inspired me to keep on the path of righteousness, integrity, and honesty. You’re a hero, rest in peace, friend.”

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) continues its investigation into the fatal crash that took Sergeant Salas’ life. While no new updates have been released, Sergeant Greg Riddell expressed the deep impact the loss has had on his colleagues. “Ken’s death has hit all of us pretty hard,” Riddell said. “WSP is dedicated to provide a complete and thorough investigation, which will take time and energy.”

In addition to his 34 years in law enforcement, Sergeant Salas proudly served in the United States Air Force for over two decades, retiring as a Technical Sergeant with the Washington State Air National Guard.

Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels echoed the widespread respect and affection for Salas, describing him as one of the kindest people he’d ever met. “He took the idea of being a servant leader to heart, and I think the men and women who worked for him would tell you that they absolutely loved working for him,” said Nowels.

Sergeant Salas tragically lost his life on Saturday while responding to a crash involving a hay baler near Cheney. According to the Washington State Patrol, the incident occurred before 8 a.m. on Interstate 90 near Four Lakes.

Troopers explained that a hay bale had fallen off the back of a truck and trailer heading toward Spokane, landing in the left lane. Sgt. Salas stopped his patrol car to help clear the debris, activating emergency lights and a directional bar.

Unfortunately, a motorcyclist failed to slow down and struck Sgt. Salas’ patrol car while attempting to pass on the left, then collided with the sergeant himself. Sgt. Salas was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

Throughout his career, Sgt. Salas served as a Spokane County Corrections Officer before becoming a deputy sheriff. He held various roles, including patrol division officer and school resource deputy.

He is survived by his wife and extended family, who now mourn the loss of a devoted husband, leader, and community servant.

The motorcyclist involved remains hospitalized with serious injuries. There is currently no information regarding plans for a memorial to honor Sergeant Salas.
