The family of Genna Spina, a vibrant 21-year-old woman from Denville, New Jersey, is grieving after her life was tragically cut short in a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 78 in Union County last weekend. In the wake of the devastating loss, friends and relatives have rallied together, launching a fundraiser to support funeral expenses and ensure that Genna is honored with the dignity and love she deserves.
The Crash on I-78
According to the New Jersey State Police, the accident occurred on Interstate 78 West near milepost 53.4 in Hillside. Investigators say the chain of events began when a Honda SUV traveling west changed lanes and struck a Toyota SUV. Shortly after, a Ford passenger car carrying Genna as a passenger collided with the Honda, causing the Ford to overturn. Moments later, a Chevrolet struck the overturned Ford.
The crash left multiple people injured, but Genna suffered the most tragic outcome. She was ejected from the vehicle during the impact and died at the scene from her injuries. The Ford’s driver sustained serious injuries, while the driver of the Toyota and the Chevrolet both suffered moderate injuries. Two passengers in the Chevrolet, including an 11-year-old child, received minor injuries. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
Remembering Genna

She was also known as a proud “cat mom,” doting on her pets with affection and showcasing her nurturing spirit. At just 21 years old, she had her whole life ahead of her — dreams, goals, and a future that was tragically stolen in an instant.
Her loved ones remember her for her kindness, her loyalty, and the warmth she carried with her. Whether through her friendships, her presence at family gatherings, or the small everyday moments she shared with those close to her, Genna left a lasting impression that will never be forgotten.
A Community Rallies in Support
To help the Spina family through this unimaginable loss, Caitlin Scanlon organized a GoFundMe fundraiser on their behalf. The campaign has seen an outpouring of generosity from the community and beyond, raising more than $30,000 toward its $35,000 goal by Friday afternoon.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the sudden and tragic loss of our beloved and cherished Genna, a sweet daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, dear friend, and cat mom,” Scanlon wrote on the fundraiser page. “At just 21 years young, Genna was taken far too soon as an innocent passenger in a car accident.”
Contributions will go toward covering funeral expenses and providing the family with financial relief as they navigate their grief. The outpouring of love is a reflection of how deeply Genna touched the lives of those around her.
Funeral and Memorial Service
A service to celebrate Genna’s life has been scheduled for Thursday, September 19, 2025, where family, friends, and community members will come together to honor her memory. The gathering will provide a space for loved ones to share stories, express their grief, and celebrate the life of a young woman gone far too soon.

Though her time on earth was heartbreakingly short, Genna Spina’s spirit lives on through the memories she created and the love she gave to her family and friends. Her story is a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with those we hold dear.
As the Denville community continues to rally around the Spina family, they do so with heavy hearts but also with a shared commitment to keep Genna’s memory alive. Her warmth, kindness, and joyful presence will remain a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew her.
