Whitlock passed away at the age of 77, leaving behind a legacy deeply rooted in blues, rock, and soul.
Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Whitlock was immersed in music from an early age, influenced by the city’s rich musical culture and the sounds of gospel, R&B, and southern rock. His talent as both a vocalist and keyboard player brought him to the forefront of the late 1960s and early 1970s rock scene.
Whitlock’s most iconic work came in 1970–71 with Derek and the Dominos, where he co-wrote and performed on the critically acclaimed album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. The record, known for its emotional depth and musical brilliance, featured Whitlock’s distinctive voice and songwriting contributions on tracks like “Tell the Truth,” “Keep on Growing,” and “Thorn Tree in the Garden.”
Outside of the Dominos, Whitlock enjoyed a long and varied career, releasing solo albums, collaborating with some of the biggest names in rock and blues, and performing with his wife, musician CoCo Carmel. Known for his powerful, soulful voice—often referred to as the “Mouth of the South”—Whitlock’s performances were filled with raw emotion and authenticity.

Friends, fellow musicians, and fans have been sharing tributes since news of his passing broke. Musician Luke Cutchen remembered him as both a mentor and a friend: “Bobby Whitlock passed today. Biggest voice, the Mouth of the South. He got me back into music and we did a bunch of shows together along with Coco Carmel. Clapton came around and gave him his money… Bobby was crazy as hell, took me under his wing, and told me to go for it. So I did.”
Another close friend wrote, “Our dear friend Bobby Whitlock has passed away at 77. Our sincere condolences to Bobby’s wife CoCo and his family on this sad day… RIP Bobby.” Bobby Whitlock’s influence on rock and blues is immeasurable. His music continues to inspire generations of artists, and his voice—both on and off the stage—will be remembered as one of the most distinctive in rock history. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
