Tragic Collision in Omaha Claims the Lives of Melissa and Jose Ajanel Suar

A heartbreaking two-vehicle crash on Friday afternoon has left two young family members dead and several others injured. The Omaha Police Department (OPD) identified the victims on Sunday as 10-year-old Melissa Ajanel Suar and 18-year-old Jose Ajanel Suar. Both were pronounced dead at the scene following the crash, which occurred shortly before 12:45 p.m. on Pacific Street near the I-680 interchange.

According to OPD, the crash involved a Toyota pickup truck and a small black Chevrolet SUV carrying multiple passengers. Investigators revealed that the Chevrolet was traveling westbound on Pacific Street, while the Toyota was headed eastbound. As the Toyota attempted a left turn onto the I-680 onramp, it collided with the Chevrolet, sending the SUV down a hill, where it struck a utility pole.

Both Melissa and Jose were inside the Toyota pickup, and the impact of the crash resulted in fatal injuries for both. Emergency responders declared them dead at the scene.

The Chevrolet was carrying seven occupants at the time of the crash. While five of the passengers sustained varying degrees of injury, the driver of the Chevrolet suffered only minor injuries. The injured individuals were transported to three local hospitals: Children’s Hospital, CHI-Bergan Mercy, and Nebraska Medicine for treatment.

In the aftermath of the collision, both directions of Pacific Street at the bridge over I-680 were closed for several hours. Eastbound lanes were shut down at 114th Street to allow for emergency response, accident reconstruction, and debris removal. The roadways reopened around 4 p.m. on Friday.

At this time, the Omaha Police Department has not yet determined the cause of the crash, and the incident remains under active investigation. No charges have been filed, and authorities have not indicated whether speed, distraction, or other factors played a role.

The community has rallied around the grieving family, offering support and condolences in the wake of this devastating loss. The OPD has expressed sympathy for the family and acknowledged the efforts of emergency teams, medical personnel, and traffic control workers who managed the aftermath of the crash.

As the investigation continues, the Omaha Police Department is urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage to come forward. With more details expected, this case remains under active investigation.

The tragic deaths of Melissa and Jose Ajanel Suar have left family, friends, and the Omaha community devastated, and many are mourning the untimely loss of these two young lives.
