CHICAGO, Ill. – A 2-year-old boy tragically died Monday afternoon after accidentally shooting himself on Chicago’s South Side, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 1 p.m. in the 300-block of East 87th Street in the Chatham neighborhood. Chicago police reported that the toddler sustained a gunshot wound to the face and was immediately transported to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, where he later passed away.

Police have identified a person of interest in connection with the shooting, though it remains unclear how the child accessed the firearm. Area detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
