Mesa Police have arrested 22-year-old Jonathan Enriquez in connection with the heartbreaking death of his infant daughter. Enriquez faces charges of first-degree murder and felony child abuse after a series of investigations revealed severe injuries to the baby, who passed away on July 26 after spending 15 days hospitalized.
Authorities were first called on July 11 when the baby was found unresponsive and not breathing. Upon arrival, emergency responders rushed her to the hospital in critical condition. Initial accounts from Enriquez and the child’s mother were inconsistent, with claims ranging from accidental falls to choking incidents.
However, further investigation uncovered a disturbing pattern. Medical examinations revealed the infant suffered a fractured skull, brain bleeding, bruising around her eyes, and broken bones, including a broken leg and ribs. The injuries were described in court documents as consistent with “slamming, crushing, or stomping,” many classified as “catastrophic.”
In a subsequent police interview, Enriquez admitted to punching the baby on the side of her head because she was “crying too much” and acknowledged using tight swaddling to control her crying. He expressed deep remorse and shame for his actions.
Enriquez is currently held on a $1 million bond as the case continues. The community and authorities mourn the loss of the child and hope justice will be served for this tragic and senseless death.
