The racing community, the town of Fergus Falls, and all who had the privilege of knowing Scott Engfer are reeling from a heartbreaking loss. Scott tragically passed away in an accident at the racetrack — a place he loved, doing what he loved. He was more than a track official — he was a dedicated husband, a brave fighter, and a true friend to so many. His presence, his laugh, and his steady hand will be deeply missed.
Back in April, Scott was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Never one to give up, he faced this challenge with quiet strength and determination. He began both oral and infusion chemotherapy in late May and was looking forward to completing his final treatment on September 22. Throughout his battle, Scott never stepped away from what he loved. Even as he endured treatments and fatigue, he continued to work, to serve, and to show up — especially at the track.
Last night, everything changed. What was supposed to be a normal race night turned into tragedy. Scott, always cautious and safety-conscious — often the first to remind others to slow down or stay alert — somehow ended up in the path of an oncoming race car while riding his 4-wheeler. In a moment, he was taken from us. It was sudden. It was devastating. And it left a hole in so many hearts.
He died at the place that brought him joy, surrounded by a community he loved. In many ways, he spent his final moments doing what he had always done — serving others, helping to make race nights run smoothly, and being part of something bigger than himself.
Our hearts are broken for the Engfer family — for the wife and loved ones he leaves behind. Please keep them close in your thoughts and prayers as they face an unimaginable loss. We also lift up the driver involved, the track crew, and all those who witnessed the accident. This kind of trauma doesn’t just go away — may they be surrounded with grace, peace, and unwavering support in the days ahead.
To know Scott was to know consistency, care, and quiet strength. He may not have sought the spotlight, but his work behind the scenes — at the track, at home, and in life — made everything around him better. His absence will be felt in every lap, in every race, in every moment shared at the track.
Lord, we ask for peace over this community. May the memories of Scott bring comfort, even as the grief feels overwhelming. We trust that he is now pain-free, wrapped in the arms of the One who gives eternal rest.
Godspeed, Scott Engfer.
Your seat at the track may be empty, but your legacy remains.
You will be missed beyond words and remembered with deep love.
